Recognition Through Grit and Consistency
āIt was as a huge honour to win Pitch of the Year,ā Ben shared. āMyself and David Worthington (Worthy) work incredibly hard across two busy sites. Recognition like this makes all the early starts, tough days, and long hours feel absolutely worth it.ā
Ben continued: āWe put a lot of hard work and effort into the pitch, so we were really, really overjoyed to receive it ā but then to actually win it just took things one step further. Weāve done really well with the pitch this season. There are a lot of sacrifices ā working Saturdays, Sundays, bank holidays ā a lot of hard hours and a lot of hours in bad weather. But itās about commitment, and when you get recognition like this, it just makes everything worthwhile.ā
The demands were significant. Alongside first-team fixtures, the pitch hosted Blackburn U21 European matches, reserve and youth games, womenās fixtures, and frequent training sessions ā all under the relentless pressure of North West weather. Yet, the surface remained resilient throughout, a true testament to the solid systems, teamwork, and consistency behind the scenes.
A Programme Built on Balance and Trust
When Craig from East Riding Turfcare first engaged with Ben, the goal was clear: build a more consistent, simplified programme that would suit a small team managing two sites.
āBen had experienced peaks and troughs in the past,ā Craig explained. āOur aim was to level that out ā create a balanced and manageable approach that still delivered top-end results.ā
This meant focusing on core turf health metrics, like addressing low soil pH during renovations and reducing irrigation demands. The grow-in phase was particularly successful, powered by ICL ProSelect 1 Premium Pitch Seed, which offered the genetic strength needed to handle intense wear ā something Phil was keen to highlight: āIt starts with the right seed genetics. ProSelect Premium Pitch was bred for the challenges of a full football calendar. Winning Pitch of the Year shows that this blend truly delivers.ā
Hands-On Support Season Round

Ben Kay, Craig Housley, and Phil Collinson conducted a pitch walk inspection, reviewing current conditions, identifying potential issues, and discussing ideas for continual improvement.
Phil and Craig remained deeply involved throughout the campaign. āWe were always available,ā Craig noted. āBen could reach us at any time ā and weād either dual-call or work with him separately to shape rolling 3-month plans based on fixtures, weather, and usage.ā
Ben confirmed the value of this approach.
āHaving Craig and Phil involved is massive. Theyāre both former groundsmen, so they understand the pressures. They listen, they adjust things when needed, and they genuinely treat this pitch like itās their own.ā
Simple, Timely, & Effective Applications
Phil was impressed with how Ben approached product usage. āWhat stood out was his simplicity and timing,ā he said. āBen never applies more than needed. He understands that good cultural practice works hand in hand with product use ā and he trusts the guidance we give.ā
Ben agreed: āOur matchday spray ā Greenmaster Liquid CalMag and Liquid Iron Effect ā gives us the wow factor and helps with post-match recovery. And our Primo Maxx II programme, driven by the Growth Degree Day model, helps with density and wear tolerance.ā
Phil added: āUsing the Syngenta Turf Advisor app, Ben tracks GDD and applies Primo precisely ā no flushes, no overgrowth, just tighter surfaces and easier management for his small team.ā

Accrington Stanley's pitch following a Greenmaster Liquid Spring & Summer Feed and Effect Iron application, delivering vibrant colour, strong presentation, and consistent growth.
Sustainability at the Core
Sustainability was another major theme across the programme. āAt ICL, we focus on minimum input for maximum effect,ā Phil said. āEvery recommendation is technically justified ā from efficient fertiliser blends to avoiding over-application. Itās not about using more, itās about using better.ā This ethos matched Benās philosophy perfectly, allowing him to balance performance with long-term sustainability.
Smooth Planning for the Season Ahead

Craig Housley checks soil compaction and inspects leaf health - just one of the many specialist services offered by East Riding Turfcare.
Having a strong programme in place has made planning easier for Ben. āWeāve kept things mostly the same ā just added more calcium during renovations. Otherwise, no major changes were needed. Thatās the power of having confidence in your plan.ā
And when asked if heād recommend this approach? āWithout hesitation. Craig, Phil, and the team at East Riding have been incredible. Craig checks in constantly and genuinely cares about what weāre doing. That kind of investment in people ā not just products ā is priceless.ā
This is more than just a turfcare programme ā itās a partnership rooted in trust, shared knowledge, and a deep commitment to excellence. For clubs looking to raise the bar, Accrington Stanleyās approach sets the standard.
